THE PROCESS

The most important step in my process is preparing the space and myself. I find painting like meditation, it’s a spiritual thing. I can’t paint when I am angry or frustrated. I paint best when I am at peace, when I feel at one with the world.

To achieve this, I start in an open space, cleared of clutter. I put out a blank canvas and light some sage. As it burns, I allow the purifying smoke to surround both me and the canvas, setting the space and allowing a connection.

I gesso the canvas, sealing that energy in.

As I begin to settle into a peaceful place, I burn a bit more sage, drop the needle on a record, and allow the music to fully transport me into the zone.

Then I get down to business. I pick out the paints. When I go to grab the cans, the right colors call to me. I start to put paint on the canvas, moving it around, putting some of my own energy into it, but still allowing the paint to stay true to its own flow.

I stop, take a look, determine what’s missing—I ask the painting, it knows what it wants to be. I grab any new colors needed, place them where I am called to, and move the canvas around, feeling the energy pour through me onto it.

Painting is simply a way to freeze the energy flowing through me onto the canvas. I am privileged to be a part of the process and to share the finished pieces with you.
